Moa

We Vakutan have a reputation for being unsubtle, one that is somewhat deserved if a bit of a stereotype. But a blind man could have seen the problems Kim endured during our failed mission to obtain one of the automatons for a sample.

She’s scared, and I think I might know why. When I was going over Tally’s recorded visual data, I spotted Kim and B’uk entering his stalactite mound quarters, and she was in there for hours alone with him.

Did she accept his offer of a cure? It seems likely. It also seems rather likely that it worked. And it’s hardly a stretch of the imagination that she would want to test out her newfound nervous responses on a handsome and powerfully built man like B’uk…

Jealous? Of course I’m a bit jealous, but I’m more concerned for Kim’s well being. Damn it. I hate being the ‘better man’ sometimes.

So when I spot Tarvel talking with B’uk quietly before the two of them venture into that self same stalactite mound, I figure it involves Kim somehow. Since it involves the commander of this IHC force I’ve been attached to as liaison, it therefore is not a conflict of interests or a waste of government materials to send Tally on a little eavesdropping mission.

Tally perches on a stalagmite’s rough surface a dozen yards away from the entrance to B’uk’s dwelling, but his amplification system can pick up a pin drop from much further away than this. Thus, I have no problems hearing every word that they say. From where I sit a short distance from the mound, I can also see their discussion in real time, though it’s a bit strange to have them speaking directly in my ears when they’re so far away.

“You wanted to speak about Kim. So speak,” B’uk says, a bit of hostility creeping into his tone.

“Oh, I’m here to speak about Kim, all right. You cured her, didn’t you?”

B’uk stiffens up, his eyes inscrutable as they scan Tarvel’s face intently.

“I did, yes,” he says at length. “What of it?”

“Well, did you ever consider the ramifications of such an impetuous and selfish act?” Tarvel demands.

“Selfish? How is it selfish to cure her of an affliction which was wrought through no fault of her own? My physician’s oath demands that I offer my services when requested.”

“Don’t give me that. You wanted to cure her to prove what a big brain you have, like always.” Tarvel sneers, both with his face and his tone. “I mean, you’re always trying to lord it over everyone else how smart you are.”

“Perhaps I should be more humble, but if I don’t spout my accolades no one else will.”

Huh. That sounded a bit insecure. Hard to believe big, buff Doctor Pi’rell with his even bigger brain would ever feel less than adequate. Of course, that might be why he acts the way he does in the first place.

“Yeah, you might consider humility. It couldn’t hurt, and you certainly haven’t tried it yet.” Tarvel’s eyes narrow.
